Food from Scratch

Cooking from scratch is central to our family. Food is what nourishes our body, affecting our mood, behavior, and physical health. That is why it is important to know what is in your food. Most commercial food contains harmful preservatives, food dyes and flavor enhancers. None of which are beneficial to our bodies, and most of which are detrimental to our bodies.

Food from scratch does not have to be complicated or time consuming. Most of the time cooking from scratch is cheaper, less time consuming, and far more nourishing.

It can be expensive to use organic produce and meat. Remember using fresh or frozen produce – organic or not – is almost always better than consuming processed food from a box, the freezer section, or fast food. We don’t purchase everything organic. One of my favorite tools to help me prioritize the organic foods I buy is The Dirty Dozen. Doing what you can to eat wholesome, freshly made, nourishing meals often goes a long way in improving our mental and physical health.

Using leftovers to make new meals helps stretch the grocery budget while offering variety for our families. It also helps us continue to cook from scratch on those busy and rushed weeknights.
